Feedback from last league match please.
« on: May 04, 2016, 10:17:39 PM »
Recently had a league match that I was a little disappointed to have only earned a draw from.  I was wondering if I could get some feedback from some experienced players (I'm new to the game) as I am trying to figure out the match engine.

Here is the match ID: 11872237

I recently bought a young AML with some nice technical stats.  They are as follows:

Davresh Nurijanian

Technique
Set Pieces   6
Crossing   15
Dribbling   17

Finishing   6
Heading   4
Long shots   6
Marking   6
Passing   19
Tackling   8
Technique   12

Mental
Aggression   13
Creativity   6
Decisions   4
Determination   6
Influence   13
Positioning   4
Off the ball   8
Teamwork   4

Physical
Acceleration   11
Agility   15
Balance   4
Jumping   6
Pace   12
Stamina   8
Strength   11

I focused passing down his flank and from the match report it looked like he had a lot of attempts at creating chances, but hardly anything worked out--He earned a 4 rating for the match :'(

Does this player need to be more well rounded to be effective in this game?  Was the defender just too much for him in the match?  Were my tactics not suitable for this player's skill-set?  Any and all help is appreciated.  Thanks!

Ok, lets look at this.
AML   Davresh Nurijanian
He had 1 shot 0 goals and no assists to give him a boost either.
He won 3 and lost 8 dribbles. Which at first glimpse looks a bit strange looking at his stats.
He had 2 successful passes and 7 passes lost. Which looks even stranger.

But keep in mind that he is a CA 5, and his adaptation rate is 9, so it will take time to blossom.
And I use the word blossom with a bit too much positivism as he is a LA 7, which isnt good enough these days to dominate most lower leagues.
His current skill as a AMR is 36-45 i general.

Lets look at his actual actions scores for some answers.
Action Pass Ball on Floor: 36-44
Action Dribbling: 38-46
Action Drill Cross: 38-46

If you look at his stats again you will see that he has quite good crossing, dribbling and passing. His agility and technique is also quite decent.
But if you look at the skills required to do these actions well, one can see :
Pass Ball On Floor: Creativity, Off the ball, Passing, Technique, Teamwork
Drill Cross (By Line): Acceleration, Pace, Aglilty, Dribbling, Technique, Off the ball, Crossing, Passing, Strength, Balance
Dribbling: Dribbling, Technique, Aglilty, Acceleration, Pace, Strength, Balance

There is an weight to which skills matter the most, but we do not know the exact formula, so lets pretend all skills matter the same.
That gives your player an average of:
Pass Ball On Floor: 9,8
Drill Cross (By Line): 11,9
Dribbling: 11,7

In general your roaming tactic selection and creative freedom gave you penalties, while the defensive tactical choices were better.
What matters the most in player performance is experience (1 star), morale (ok - average), position proficiency (this is ok), condition (he is now 84% which means he was not 100 but should have been over 92% at least) and lastly adaptation (9).

With all this is mind, do you see the larger picture of how he performed as he did? That said, Im guessing he was unfortunate as well, some key decisions did not go his way. He will improve as his experience, level and adaptation increases. But you are probably overestimating how much some few high skills matter. One clear mistake many managers do is to get lured in by players with a couple of high skills which overall is good in real life. His dribbling, passing and crossing is quite good for example. And those are skills you would want in a winger. However, imagine his crossing to be irrelevant, but had received training to bring his strength to 16 and balance to 15 in stead.

Then you'll have an average dribbling skill off 14. And what do you want your player to do after a successful dribble? If you want him to pass the ball on the floor to technical forwards, well his teamwork of 4 and off the ball of 8 and creativity of 6 will greatly reduce the chance of him making a successful pass.

These are the kinds of synergies you would need to figure out, either how to fully select the first eleven with the best chance of succeeding, and also the synergies between players in different positions. Its a much higher cost to bring a payer above skill 16, which means you essentially loose the potential of increasing all the skills if you do it. And sometimes, especially with very high LA players with good PR rate, you should. But in most cases leaving the training regime once a players reaches 15 or 16, and replacing it with anther regime within a skill in the same skill action group, is more valuable.

Specializing a player for a certain thing or sets of things are good with players who cant become stars, like LA 6-9. When buying players to fulfill a certain role, get players that are good in the situations you would need them and play them the most, and disregard everything else. That will get you most out of your player in the long run, matching your resource level.

Hopefully I have explained some of the more complex aspects of the GKO match engine. I've tried to simplify it a bit (and actually with skills weights I think your player would get even better averages than in my examples). But his passing seems alluring, but you would in most cases, based on your tactic, see that other skills are even better, and some few very low skills drag the average down quite a bit.

Look at the details in the rulebook:

kschuster, here's the short answer  :P

I'd say his poor performance was mainly due to his lack of adaptation to your team combined with a lack of experience in general. Unfortunately adaptation rate and experience gain rate are both hidden stats, so there is no way to tell just how long it may take for him to adapt. Usually it takes anywhere from around a month to around 6 months from purchase to full adaptation. Experience gain rates generally vary between 1 star/30 games to 1 star/60 games or so.

The player is by no means "world class" but his skills are around average or even slightly above average for your league. He should do much better once he has fully adapted to your team and more so as he improves his skills as he reaches his LA.

Moving forward, I'd suggest you focus on training off the ball, stamina, and speed (acceleration and pace) if you like to use the "more roaming" tactic, although you should check those links lordaust posted if you want to use different tactics. Use him at least 30 minutes in as many games as possible to speed his adaptation and experience gain!

Good luck  :)

Wow Lordaust--Thank you for putting in the time for such a comprehensive answer.  Brian, thank you as well for some elaboration to help clarify.  What you both say makes sense.  It seems that more skills are needed in multiple categories as opposed to high skill valuations in technical ability.

Until I can get the type of team composition I want, do you guys recommend just going balanced/default for my tactical choices?  I don't want to penalize myself from my tactics on match day.

maybe...but this depends on your team.

I'd recommend making a spreadsheet so you can calculate your players' tactical scores and determine which tactic is best for your team, just remember that other factors (experience & adaptation as well as your overall teamwork average) also factor in.

As for the team philosophy (dynamic/balanced/standing), you should set this based on how certain you are your team instructions will work for you.

I'd recommend making a spreadsheet...

Typically every problem Brian come across will ultimately end up on him making a spreadsheet. :D
And he isn't wrong. I think I have like 20 different spreadsheets of different thing helping me to understand what I should do and when. :)
