Well, it depends on many factors, specially on your oponent's playingstyle.
If your oponent plays defensive style, scoring situations are harder to create, so it must be slower, you should play short passing there.
If you play counter attack, direct passing is probably the best choice, attack is fast, only few players are involved in that chance after all.
Also, if your oponent plays offside trap, direct passing is the best choice, far better than short passing, the reason is simple: defenders rarely receive passes from midfielders, you usually see midfielders passing to attackers, so your chances to fall into offside trap are lower.
Default passing is ok if you ignore what will use your oponent against you, or if you expect an open/balanced match.
