I guess I just feel that one single nation's players are dominating, almost controlling the player market, and there should be something to keep the leagues differentiated to some extent, at least.

Suggestions/Bugs / [Suggestion] Homegrown player rule
« on: August 16, 2011, 01:22:35 AM »
A couple of thoughts I had:

Homegrown rule: I don't know if this has become an issue anywhere yet, but I'm sure it will eventually. Each team should be required to maintain at least 8 (or > 1/3 of total players if the team has more than 24) players from their own national leagues. These players would only need to have spent the equivalent of three seasons in the national leagues. New players, spawned at registration or promoted from academy (i.e. all players with a given nationality) would automatically have this status, and foreigners can achieve it after three seasons, which need not be consecutive.

Eventually, it would also be cool to have language stats (for most major languages) for players, where very low proficiency would deliver a penalty in performance, but training could fix it...

Yes, but do the FL/R positions have any effects on the game that is different from an FC? Do they increase the odds of moving the ball upfield on the flanks, or on a counter attack? Do they increase the odds of recovering the ball from an overhit cross? Do the side forwards even do any crossing? Thanks in advance! ;D

Suggestions/Bugs / Re: Youth League Suggestion
« on: August 15, 2011, 06:30:26 PM »
I agree there should be a youth league, but I don't think it should be for everyone. For many players, one team is enough, and generating more youth players than are already available would flood the system with youth players to the point of absurdity. Youth leagues should be optional, but available to teams with at least 15 players on their youth squad, and a specially appointed youth team coach. You can collect players through academy promotion and the market. However, I've always thought each time one upgrades their academy, it should raise the number of youth players that can be promoted per season by one. Good quality academies should be able to promote 10 or 11 players per season.

However, since only a fraction of all users will develop large enough youth squads to participate, the leagues should be continental rather than national, at least until a given nation has enough youth teams to form their own national youth league. This could be done using the nations in real-world confederations like UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, etc. This would keep game times (and hypothetical travel times) reasonable. What we don't want are global youth leagues dominated by Thai clubs (there sure seem to be a lot of them), unless we live in Thailand or somewhere else in Asia. This could also serve as a foundation to organize regional champions leagues instead of the global champions league....

Having a youth team in a youth league on top of the regular team would not be a cheap endeavor. It would require additional coaches, would put added requirements and stress on existing facilities, and would thus surely increase their operating/upgrade costs. Of course it would also bring in some revenue, but the amount would be limited.

Good point, but the general philosophy behind using a formation without a "true" center midfielder shouldn't leave a pocket of empty space anywhere. In it, the DMC acts as MC when on the attack while the AMC acts as a second striker (SS). Meanwhile, the AMC does the MC job when defending, allowing one of the central defenders to drop into a sweeper role

****This brings up another topic: the positions of Second Striker (SS) and Sweeper (SW), and their roles in the game.****

While the idea of adding L and R to the F position is very important, it would shake the Gokickoff universe to its very core. There's bound to be players whose main striker turns out to be less-than-proficient in the center position, and a few will be left without a true FC (their former FCs reclassified as FL or FR). While many will make it through relatively unscathed, most will surely be affected. There are bound to be users that get annoyed with such a change, but I think few will actually leave for good. At the same time, it would be sure to cause a surge of activity on the transfer market, which will be good for everyone, since many forwards are also proficient in other positions. Overall, I think it would be good for the game.

Yeah, in real life, players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Gervinho, and Theo Walcott excel on the wings, but rarely get played in the center, with good reason. Other players, like Drogba, Van Persie or Darren Bent function much better in the center. Sill others do fine in either slot.  If all forwards are central players, it makes me wonder if the program is even designed to include crossing and wing play by anyone other than midfielders and side defenders. This, then, would seem to act as a penalty to anyone playing a formation with 3 forwards.

Suggestions/Bugs / [Suggestion] Forward wings
« on: August 14, 2011, 04:28:53 AM »
Some formations allow 3 forwards, but the position of forward winger doesn't exist. My suggestion is that forwards be assigned winger proficiencies based on their stats. Some may even lose their "natural" (or better) rating as FC (replaced with FR, FL or both, FRL) because their stats would suggest they would be better placed on the wings rather than muscling in the center. This would be particularly true for players currently categorized as midfield wingers AND "FC". I guess I feel that GK is the only position that doesn't have wing players. And now I'll get off my soapbox.

Suggestions/Bugs / Re: Suggestion - Hiring coach
« on: August 13, 2011, 01:08:49 AM »
Better yet, can we just have a market for coaches, much like that for players but without transfer fees? If you sack a coach, they go on the market list. Then we can examine the coaches for the attributes we want, much like for players. We can then bid on the coaches' salaries rather than the transfer price.

Find Friendly Match / Re: Friendly Requests

1st place team in USA top level (season 3) looking for friendlies. If you want to play the Mean Machine (29585), let me know.

Unfortunately have no time for friendlies right now, I'm in the WCL.

Suggestions/Bugs / Re: Loan and exchange
« on: August 06, 2011, 06:59:00 PM »
One solution to some of the potential problems of loaning players would be to have a transfer window that would limit when players could be loaned and dictate for how long, particularly for top leagues. Also, something could be done to prevent clubs from repeatedly loaning players from/to the same team more than once. After that, the clubs would have to complete a transfer.

Good point, but maybe you're highlighting a deeper flaw...teams that start mid-season. Somehow when I started, it wasn't during a season, and I assumed that's how it works for everyone. It doesn't make sense to me how or why a new player would start well into a league season. Of course, a new player is very eager to get started, so  this could be solved by having new seasons start every few weeks (or as soon as enough new players have registered) at the lowest levels. Or, a transfer window would only be applied to teams in top leagues.

So how's this coming? I didn't see anything about it in the new season. Will this culminate in a club world cup? ;D

Suggestions/Bugs / Re: [Suggestion] Transfer windows

I understand what you're saying, and I agree, mostly. Basically, I'm suggesting that transfer windows only be used to limit the times when the players can actually transfer (move themselves from one club to another). Nothing else need change. In the real world, transfer fees are usually paid when a contract is signed, which may happen long before the player actually packs up and moves.

But perhaps more importantly, such a change would put much greater emphasis on building and maintaining a decent youth team. There's nothing against promoting a youth player whenever it's advantageous. So if you or I really need a new player when the transfer window is closed, then we simply promote a youth player. It happens all the time in pro football. Of course, this may necessitate that everyone gets (and must maintain at least) a bare-bones youth team to start, or something reasonable for those of us who have been around a while. Finally, with a 4 month season and, say, a 2 week transfer window at the midpoint, the longest we'd have to go without getting totally new players would be ~7 weeks. Not too unbearable I'd like to hope.

Suggestions/Bugs / [Suggestion] Transfer windows

The way I understand it, currently a team can transfer (or hypothetically, loan) players any time they want, and the player instantly appears on the new club. The way I see it, transfers should be limited to "windows" during the off-season and a brief period in the middle of the season. This does assume that all leagues' seasons happen on the same schedule. Of course, the process of bidding on players and securing transfers can still happen during the rest of the season, but players can't move to the purchasing club until the transfer window opens. Just a thought. :)

Suggestions/Bugs / Top leagues should come with annual TV revenue
« on: July 06, 2011, 01:00:09 AM »
Like in most leagues around the world (that have promotion/relegation), a club's presence in the nation's top league always comes with TV revenue. But not here. Prior to each season in the top league, each club should receive between $50K and $200K (Depending on the nation's level of interest) for the TV contract alone. Hope someone else agrees with me!
